Coaching philosophy
My coaching philosophy is to embrace the process. There is no such thing as luck in running; everything you get out of it is what you put in. It’s also important to have fun doing it, so my goal is to make that experience as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.
Favourite race distance and why?
The 3000m steeplechase was always my favourite race on the track. I loved the technicality and I found it allowed me to become totally involved in a race. The only thing to focus on was the next barrier. I think it’s a perfect metaphor for training; the stumbles and falls are all a part of getting to the finish line. On top of that I met my wife while we were both training for steeplechase at The University of Montana!
Most memorable coaching moment:
I don’t have one particular moment that stands out for me. Those moments have come in the form of athletes' comments “I never thought I would be able to run that fast, that far, etc.” Seeing athletes accomplish things they never thought they could is what makes coaching so fun.
Favourite running podcast:
My favourite podcast at the moment is “Just Fly Performance Podcast”. Even though it isn’t specifically about running, I love to get the perspective of other coaches and therapists. I think it’s important to explore training outside of just running and be open to new ideas. I’m always looking for the best way to help the athletes I work with.
Quote that inspires you:
“Ask yourself: ‘Can I give more?’.
The answer is usually: ‘Yes’.”
